New research has shown for the first time that omega-3 in fish oil could "substantially and significantly" reduce the signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis.
According to the University of Bristol study, funded by Arthritis Research UK and published in the journal Osteoarthritis and Cartilage, omega-3-rich diets fed to guinea pigs, which naturally develop osteoarthritis, reduced disease by 50 per cent compared to a standard diet.
The research is a major step forward in showing that omega-3 fatty acids, either sourced from fish oil or flax oil, may help to slow down the progression of osteoarthritis, or even prevent it occurring, confirming anecdotal reports and "old wives' tales" about the benefits of fish oil for joint health.
Lead researcher Dr John Tarlton, from the Matrix Biology Research group at the University of Bristol's School of Veterinary Sciences, said classic early signs of the condition, such as the degradation of collagen in cartilage and the loss of molecules that give it shock-absorbing properties, were both reduced with omega-3.
"Furthermore, there was strong evidence that omega-3 influences the biochemistry of the disease, and therefore not only helps prevent disease, but also slows its progression, potentially controlling established osteoarthritis," he said.

The ever-shifting landscape of vitamin and supplement studies. I was taking fish oil supplements for some time, for their purported beneficial effects on the heart, when I read about an increased risk of prostate cancer being associated with its use. Asked my personal physician, she said she hadn’t heard about that. Jury’s out...
Then my cardiologist expressed concern that I listed fish oil as one of the regular medicines or supplements that I take. He was concerned about something else, and advised me not to take more than 1000 units/day, but really, there’s no good reason to take them. Jury’s out again...
Now, this. What’s next?

It’s confusing and frustrating, looking for the effective remedy that doesn’t have too many negative side effects.
I recall when I first began having arthritis about 25 years ago.
Glucosamine, Chondroitin and Ginko Biloba were all very popular treatments. I tried all three off and on for years. I never noticed any pain relief at all, so I just stopped buying them. I am experimenting with Turmeric-Curcumin right now. We’ll see.
This must be why one finds so few krill with osteoarthritis.
Purslane also has a good amount of omega 3 and loads of other goodness. Best part is that it grows wild in many places.
For my arthritis, I eat sliced beef tendon in hot oil. It’s a traditional Chinese dish that also pretty much cured my painful joints. I went from taking ibuprofen or naproxen all day to walk to not need try any meds at all. I just eat the beef tendon when I get that arthritis twinge and it fixes it.
Took glucosamine and chondroitin for some time, also. May have been coincidence, but I did start to feel somewhat better. Haven’t taken them for several years, and haven’t noticed any change, so -— the jury’s out...
On the other hand, I’ve changed my lifestyle and lost 120 lbs, keeping it off. Between that and eating more healthful foods, maybe that has more bearing on feeling better than vitamins and supplements.

Never heard of it. But I’m a seafoodaholic, so my knowledge of healthy food is limited to that. I eat a lot of salmon swimming in olive oil. I was once diagnosed with degenerative spinal arthritis, and there’s no trace of it now. I don’t know if there’s a connection.

I had a 100lb loss some years ago, but over eight, nine years, it has all come back. Maybe lightening can strike twice. Hope springs eternal.

I tried tons of supplements for my RA, but never found any to help.
I did the Autoimmune Protocol (AIP) diet very religiously for around a year, and it helped quite a bit; however, I never could get through the reintroduction phase. Its designed to identify food triggers, but I was never able to correlate my flare ups with particular foods. Eating exclusively meat (with a focus on organs and connective tissue) and leaves is very hard, but its helped many folks.
I also learned to make some killer bone broth. Anyone with arthritis should be consuming real broth. Its simple and does limit damage. Its taken scientists decades to catch up to those grandmas!

Having bad knees, I started taking glucosamine/chondroitin some time ago. At that time my right knee was already gone and I had to get an implant, but continued to take the stuff. During that time, I had x-ray done on the really bad knee and the not so bad left knee. After three years, with a check-up had another x-ray done and the cartilage in the left knee had improved. Later I had to do a partial replacement anyway. Now, many years later, my knee is really hurting me and I just had a stem-cell injection done. It is a miracle.
Where did you go for the stem cell injections? Colorado?
I am hoping that they will be there and covered by the time I need them.
