WORD FOR THE DAY(6/25/18)Jabberwocky

Word of the Day : May 28th, 2018

Jabberwocky

noun JAB-er-wah-kee

Definition

: meaningless speech or writing

Did You Know?

In a poem titled "Jabberwocky" in the book Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There (1872), Lewis Carroll warned his readers about a frightful beast:

Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!

Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!

This nonsensical poem caught the public's fancy, and by 1908 jabberwocky was being used as a generic term for meaningless speech or writing. The word bandersnatch has also seen some use as a general noun, with the meaning "a wildly grotesque or bizarre individual." It's a much rarer word than jabberwocky, though, and is entered only in the Merriam-Webster Unabridged Dictionary.

Examples

Amanda learned to ignore her critics, dismissing their attacks as the jabberwocky of minds with nothing more important to think of about.

"When LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh stepped into the crowded room, fashionably late, jabberwocky ceased and the only sound you heard was the whir and click of cameras." — Greg Cote, The Miami Herald, 28 Sept. 2010

My now defunct high school had the Jabberwock as its mascot.

It is interesting that it symbolizes meaningless chatter, which, at the time, I felt my “education” was rapidly becoming.

Jabba hockey?

The description of a jabberwock can apply to felines and raptors particularly, with respect to jaws and claws.

The illustration of our school mascot looked like a dragon, but had the qualities of both a raptor and a cat.

There once was a POTUS named Barack,
Whose speeches were just jabberwock,
When he desired a cookie,
He asked the First Wookie,
Who said go get your own cotton picken snack.

Jerseywocky

Paul Kieffer

'Twas Bergen and the Erie road
Did Mahwah into Paterson;
All Jersey were the Ocean Groves
And the Red Bank Bayonne.

"Beware the Hopatcong, my son!
The teeth that bite! The nails that claw!
Beware the Bound Brook bird, and shun
The Kearney Communipaw!"

He took his Belmar blade in hand,
Long time the Folsom foe he sought,
Till rested he by a Bayway tree
And stood awhile in thought.

And as in Nutley thought he stood,
The Hopatcong, with eyes of flame,
Came Whippany through the Englewood
And Garfield as it came.

One two! one two! and through and through
The Belmar blade went Hackensack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went Weehawken back.

"And hast though slain the Hopatcong?
Come to my arms, my Perth Amboy!
Hohokus day! Soho! Rahway!"
He Caldwell in his joy.

'Twas Bergen and the Erie road
Did Mahwah into Paterson;
All Jersey were the Ocean Groves
And the Red Bank Bayonne.

Speaking of jabbawookies (er, Michelle Obola), has anybody seen her latest “fashion” on TV?

Seems she has been neutered as a spokesman for the rich and famous as soon as she left their White Hut.

It’s a wonderful poem. Here’s the whole thing:

Twas Brillig and the slithy Toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe,
All mimsy were the borogoves
And the momeraths outgrabe.

Beware the Jabberwock, my son,
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jub-jub bird and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!

He took his vorpal sword in hand,
Long time the maxnome foe he sought,
So rested he by the Tum Tum Tree
And stood a while in thought.

And then in uffish thought he stood
The Jabberwock with eyes of flame
Came whiffling thru the tulgey wood
And burbled as it came!

One two one two, and thru and thru
The vorpal blade went snicker snak!
He left it dead and with its head he went galumphing back.
“And hast thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms! My beamish boy!
Oh frabjous day! Callooh, Callay! “ He chortled in his joy.

Twas brillig and the slithy Toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe,
All mimsy were the borogoves
And the momeraths outgrabe.
