Boy we too have been keeping indoors. I do a 10 min. at a time - just the necessities.
Good that you figured it out. Certain beds that I have also need shading for some things. I use an old sheet, buy I have some poles that I use, so I don’t have to take it on and off - it ‘s like an awning.
Hubby makes his extra money pouring concrete. He’s retired teacher, but always worked in the summer pouring concrete-worked his way through college pouring curb and gutter and basements, sidewalks etc.
We have almost continuous concrete patio all around the house. And we have an all brick home-hubby laid all the brick and my oldest daughter carried hod.
Amen to that. It was a cool 66 degrees just after sun up. Merciful break from the heat.
Thanks, Tubebender. The last of my garlic harvest. And the new patio extension. Hubby will paint the rest of the concrete to match the pavers and the concrete blocks he used to extend my raised bed.
Sounds really bad. I have used those Beetle traps and hubby squashed them. I think he may have also washed them off with the hose and then drowned them.
The are really only bothering my rosa rugosa plant and we don’t use rose hips that often, so it was more of a pretty hedge type plant that we planted as an experiment. It has pretty roses.
We are going to have to go squirrel hunting - the jerks got all the apples before they were even beginning to ripen. Hubby didn’t think anything would bother them till they were closer to ripe and so he didn’t cover them.
And today was gorgeous! I hopped on the bike and rode over 50 miles among the cranberry bogs of SE MA.

I know, the first time I canned I was hooked. It was so exciting to have something shelf stable and beautiful in a mason jar. (Except when I can meat, that’s not so pretty!)
What are they called, Japanese beetles? I’ll look it up on the ortho website – or maybe get out of magnifier and read the fine print on the little booklet attached of the bottle. And see if it affects them. Problem is if they are eating everything in their path, it would cost a fortune to treat every bit of vegetation.
I agree, sometimes it seems like the plagues of Egypt when I see bugs all over my trees, garden, blueberry bushes… It makes me so mad.

Hubby is awesome. We bought architecture books and stuff and he studied and we drew up plans and revised and discussed them for 3 years before we started the house.
We hired someone to help with the electric, drywall, and attic insulation. The rest Hubby did.
Previous years the beetles decimated my raspberries, and ate the flowers off dad’s magnolia. This year I’ve seen maybe 2.
There are 2 likely possibilities for why they aren’t as bad this year. I’m hoping it’s because I had chickens out eating the grubs before they could grow up. JB grubs were my chickens’ first “live” food, and they still go crazy over them.
But it’s also possible that the weird spring weather interrupted their cycle. We had a late spring freeze that just hung around. It did a number on the songbird population, local news was asking people to put out mealworms because of how many robins were starving to death.
Wonder if that mint trick would keep coons out of the corn? Hmmmm....
So, the beetles haven’t bothered the apple tree leaves? Mine look like lace.

When you make pickles in canning jars, using hot liquid and properly sealing lids, you know you don’t have to refrigerate until opening, right? Just checking, cause it takes weeks for that dill flavor to go thru and thru and you needn’t use precious fridge space.
Also, you don’t have to put the pepper in the pickles. For my usual pickles I put in a mild jalapeno or banana pepper so everyone can enjoy them. I’ve got 3 granddaughters who really like hot and for them I throw in hotter seranos or jalapenos.
I also pickle green beans, green tomatoes, cauliflower, peppers and sometimes a mix of what I have using a mix of 2 parts water/1 part vinegar with 1/3 cup salt per quart of vinegar and water. Boil, pack the jars, fill, seal and water bath 5 min. This helps to preserve my good garden food without refrigeration.
