WEYMOUTH, Mass. -- A Massachusetts police officer and bystander have died from wounds sustained when a suspect allegedly took the officer's gun and fired following a vehicle crash and a foot chase. Authorities say Weymouth officer Michael Chesna was shot multiple times before 8 a.m. Sunday, and died from the injures at South Shore Hospital.
Officials say an unidentified elderly woman also died after being hit by stray bullets in a nearby home.
Weymouth Police Chief Richard Grimes identified the shooting suspect as Emmanuel Lopes, and said he was in custody.
Police say the suspect crashed a car, fled the scene, and attacked Chesna with a stone. Chesna fell to the ground, and officials say, Lopes took the officer's gun and shot Chesna multiple times.
Lopes then fled and fired more shots during a chase. Police say some of those shots fatally struck the woman. Lopes suffered a leg wound.
Chesna had been with the Weymouth Police Department for six years, almost to the day, CBS Boston reports. He leaves behind a wife and two young children.

This occurred about 10 minutes away from me. It is a very thickly settled area with not too much crime.
I wonder if this dirtbag was domestic or imported.... Given that he has a Brockton address as well, I’m guessing illegal.
In a civil society, ten politicians who support illegals should suffer the same fate as those innocents who are the victims of these “dreamers”. Am I overreacting?
My hometown! Relatively safe place to live in the 70s and 80s. Very patriotic town of mostly Irish & Italian-American Catholic families...
The drug-infestation and section-8 marched in sometime in the early 90s. Now it’s just another trashy Boston suburb, but there there are still good people living there.

My wife grew up there and went to South High. Most of the town is OK. Lake St., and any Section 8 areas, and some of the big apartment complexes.....not so much...

I’m Weymouth South High Class of 87 ! I grew up a ways from where this terrible event happened, down on Union St. We left our doors unlocked in the 80s. I still have a few friends and family living in Weymouth, so I go back there all the time..
I don’t recall anything this violent happening to a cop in Weymouth ever.
Illustrating my contention that the phrase, "an unarmed man" is meaningless (unless they actually have no arms).
So far, according to website “Heavy”, he was a “native of Brockton”. Whether or not he’s a dreamer, I don’t know.

Lots and lots of Puerto Ricans in Mass. They all have citizenship, too.
It’s possible that Lopes is an illegal alien from Brazil or Portugal. Lots of both in MA. Then again, he could be born in the US. Either way I hope he dies in prison.
