U.S. Coast Guard crews initially responded around 6 a.m. to reports that several crew members and passengers were injured aboard the tour boat Hot Shot.

The boat returned to Wailoa Harbor in Hilo with the injured passengers around 7 a.m., county officials said.

Four passengers were taken by ambulance to the Hilo Medical Center. One person, a woman in her 20s, was in serious condition with a fractured femur. The other passengers suffered burns and scrapes, according to the state Department of Land and Natural Resources.  Big Island fire officials said their injuries were considered superficial.

Fist sized pieces of flaming debris too.

“the tour boat Hot Shot.” Part Deux?

The Civil Defense and USGS people there preach over and over again to stay the hell away from the lava ocean entry for exactly this reason. These tourists want to go right up to where molten rock meets seawater.

Stupid hurts. Zero sympathy here.

I jog right past that boat when it is docked at Suisan Fish Company in Hilo Bay. People
are packed in there pretty good, so that descent of the hot rock onto that cluster of people
out at sea many hours from a dock would have been frightening.

I guess the girl’s femur slowed the rock down enough that it didn’t punch a hole through the boat hull.

Misprint in article. Name of the boat is Hot Spot.
