Dear Olog-hai,

This is a scale based on government control, so yes, these two belong on the right, on this scale. I stand my ground.

You can replace the scale of “government control” with anything you wish (i.e., taxes, regulations, war-mongering, bake sales, bowling tournaments, etc.), and the adjustment of political affiliations will naturally happen on the respective scales.

BTW, I love to illustrate this scale to lefties...es-plodey head reaction. Also, this scale offers such a good teaching moment, like now.

The Founding Fathers were not anarchists. Nor did they envision government legislation of moral behavior, but for the people to be of such high character as to do that themselves and to have a federal government that gave them the freedom to do so. The possibility of illustrating the Founding Fathers as being to the left of anarchists and/or to the left of libertarians is to mistake their legacy and possibly to insult them. The US Constitution does not stand for so-called “government control” especially of that which is supposed to be private; it was to have left the true sovereignty to God. The Declaration of Independence did not envision government-less society either; is it to the “left” of anarchy?

Karl Marx tried to pander to anarchists by painting communism as having no government, the state to have “wither(ed) away” and replaced by (as he put it) “an association in which the free development of each is the condition for the free development of all”. That was no attempt to woo anyone who might be on the right side of any political spectrum, not even from how he envisioned it.
