Ya know, based on some of the responses it’s amazing how many here don’t seem to have the slightest clue regarding common sense basic defensive driving tactics.

The whole discussion is probably academic. I think it’s safe to say with 100% certainty that no driver is ever going to face criminal charges in a motor vehicle crash involving someone else’s debris on the road.

Truck retreads, otherwise known as “road gators”, can do a lot of damage. I hit one, and I was lucky it only knocked loose the front plastic splashguard underneath my vehicle. Road gators can do serious suspension and steering gear damage that can adversely affect the handling of a vehicle.

My impression is that, at highway speeds (60 mph and up) the majority of drivers keep no more than two car lengths between them and the car in front.

I think you’re mischaracterizing some of these responses. The issue here isn’t driving skills ... it’s the legal standards for criminal charges in a motor vehicle crash.

It’s unclear why he drifted over the grassy median and into the oncoming lane.

He knows somebody.

Guilty until proven innocent.........I love your way of thinking. Lets throw him in prison along with Trump.........

Even if it had been crushed down, there probably still wasn’t a lot left of them.

The accident I saw looked a lot like that and they had not yet had time to cut the car up.

It was covered with a tarp like that picture, which tells me the bodies were still in the car.

I don’t see why it would take that long

It's not CSI-New Jersey where all crimes are solved within an hour........

That MAY be the case, but not necessarily.

Threads like these don't deserve to be posted. Too many experts who are actually morons claiming to make judgment ahead of investigations that haven't even been started or fulfilled.

Everyone wants to be a star in saying "See, I was right"..............LOL!

run over a truck tire and a bumper at a speed of 60+ miles per hour, then come back and tell us how easy it was to control your vehicle.

It is a lot harder to control a car when only one hand is on the wheel. Many folks do not use two hands on the wheel.

that the driver wandered off the RIGHT side of the road and over-corrected when steering back to the left.

I have read that is what they think may have happened. The truck driver and passenger, driver of car #1 (hit first) were all taken to the hospital, treated and released.

The road is a limited access, 4 lane toll road with grassy medians and no median barriers. The speed limit is 65.

Delaware said that after investigation, if warranted, they will charge the driver of the truck (who is a Maryland resident). So far, no charges warranted.

Delaware does have a seat belt law - driver's responsibility to be sure all passengers are belted in - none of the four girls were.

The driver is identified in the above article - name, age, home town.

There was no local news blackout of the story.

The father WAS.

Yes, one report at least had to mention that.

But if you saw the minivan, you’d be hard-pressed to say that mother was lucky to get out. Not very survivable.

LOL. I, on the other hand, actually have experience in these things — though my expertise is mainly in roadway design and operations, not motor vehicle forensics.

From what I’ve seen, the lack of seat belt use may not have been a major factor here. One of the five fatalities was belted in, so this was clearly a high-impact collision that would have caused a lot of damage even if everyone was belted in.
