Hysteria has been coursing through the left at the thought of Donald Trumps conservative policies turning America into some right wing dystopia. So much so that liberals have turned to using the fictional land of Gilead from Hulus The Handmaids Tale as a warning for the kind patriarchal doom that could befall our society.
The Daily Beast took the best course of journalistic action, and interviewed Ann Dowd, the actress who plays the infamous Aunt Lydia on the series. At first, the interview was intended to be a deeper dive into her character, but devolved into a critique of the Trump administration, and Sarah Huckabee Sanders.
Hey, as long as we all wake up to the impending doom at hand, right?
Asked whether she agreed that there were parallels between the fictional world she performs in and reality Dowd said shed seen some concerning things in American society. I can tell you that its not the writers intent to mirror what was is going on, sadly, in this world or this country. she said. But it is to wake people up, keep the dialogue going, talk.
You know, the line that I find so haunting from the first season is when Offred says, When we finally put our phones down it was too late.
Dowd claimed that she didnt see America turning into a full-fledged Gilead, however she pointed to the pro-life movement and claimed that its work was still able to cause all sorts of problems for society. She said, When you see, also, Roe v. Wade, thats not a simple question. Criticizing impassioned pro-lifers, she stated To all those pro-life individuals who are picketing and doing what theyre doing, I want to ask them how many foster children they have in their homes.
Dowd found that this, and the degree of racism, and ignorance in todays world are simply shocking. She stated, the permission people seem to have now to step out of the shadows in terms of white supremacy, that shocked me, how organized it was and the degree of it.
Clearly, this was Dowds segue into criticizing the Trump administration, specifically the woman her character was infamously compared to by Michelle Wolf during the White House Correspondents Dinner.
Dowd was asked what she thought about Sarah Huckabee being called the real-life Aunt Lydia. She argued that she didnt see a complete congruence between the two, but nonetheless took time to rattle on about the communications directors incompetence. Aunt Lydia has very little room for confusion and mayhem, so I dont think she would have ever taken the [Sanders] job in the first place. She added even though she has no interest in making personal attacks on Sanders, I can disagree with her entirely. I do. I dont know what the hell shes doing.
Clearly, Dowd didnt want to come off as bitter as Michelle Wolf, for good reason. Personally attacking her, I have no interest in doing that. I would have no problem doing that with Trump, because he should be in jail for a number of reasons.
Sounds more like your problem and not Sarah's.
Darkness doesn’t understand light.
What's an Ann Dowd?
You're an actress, sweetie, you don't need to know squat. Acting and stupidity are symbiotic.
Just read the script someone else wrote, and try to act...
So we are supposed to think that America is like this fictional land in The Handmaid’s Tale?
And thus being so educated, we are supposed to go vote Democrat??? What the heck???
They are still pushing this narrative that Sarah Sanders is Aunt Lydia???
‘Star’ should be in quotes. These people hold no level of fame or celebrity among my crowd.
Margaret Sanger was not pro-choice she wanted no more babies for a period of 10 years following ww2 and tough luck to any woman who wanted a child and would be unable to bear after the moratorium.
I never considered that Aunt Lydia was inherently bad or evil at least during season 2. She just seemed like somebody doing what they need to do to survive and teaching other girls what they need to do to survive. Nazi camp guard comparisons aside, She was in a bad spot, covered for some of the women several times and never took pleasure in punishing the girls.

I felt no satisfaction at her murder at the end of the season finally.

How queer the timing is surely damned suspicious for such an adaptation that hasn’t been attempted since the days of “Reaganbush” or “Thatcher”.
If it wasn’t intended as a commentary about the ‘wrong’ party being in power, why didn’t they remake this anti-Christian agitprop was ObamaIslama was president?
Wrong. The ENTIRE premis of the ENTIRE series is the right wing, hate-filled, male-dominated good/female-enslaved myth that the national socialist party believes is the Trump adminstration in particular and conservative life in general.
Rather, that IS the Muslim religion the socialist demand the world import.
you must be responding to somebody elses post since I didn’t express any opinion regarding the premise of the show.
I watched part of it one time cause I heard so much awful stuff about it.
It lived down to my expectations.
Well, she actually has a real job, instead of pretending to be someone else for a living.
To all those pro-life individuals who are picketing and doing what theyre doing, I want to ask them how many foster children they have in their homes.
Murder is murder, Ann Dowd. Taking in or not taking in foster children has nothing to do with the issue of abortion.
“Dick Cheney is Darth Vader”
“GW Bush is Voldemort”
“Donald Trump is Thanos”
“Sarah Sanders is Aunt Lydia”

Thanks Robert A Cook PE.
There’s an IQ test to be a democrat - person has to score below 100...
