WASHINGTON There are zero second-place finishers serving in Congress and Danny OConnor, the Democrat in Ohio's high-profile special election Tuesday, finished second.
But Democrats say the result is making them feel more bullish than ever about their prospects to flip the House in November.
"I have never been more confident that we will take back the House," said Rep. Ben Ray Lujan of New Mexico, the chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.
And O'Connor could still make it Washington, even if he can't close the 1,754 vote deficit against Republican Troy Balderson (thousands of provisional and absentee ballots have yet to be counted, making it too close to call). He'll have another shot in a November rematch, when students will be back on campus at Ohio State University and turnout is expected to be higher.
But Democrats don't need OConnor to win this fall.
There are 68 and 79 GOP-held congressional districts that are more competitive than where O'Connor and Balderson are running and Democrats need just 23 to take the House from the GOP.
Most of those seats would turn blue if they swung as much as Ohios 12th did on Tuesday.
"Nothing that happened on Tuesday night suggests that the environment is improving for Republicans. They barely held a traditionally GOP seat in Ohio," said Kyle Kondik, an analyst at the University of Virginia's Center for Politics, who added that other results showed "a House playing field that is expanding, not contracting,"

Liberals, trying to tell themselves it's all good...
When they lose big in November, they will sing a different tune.
Totally unexpected.
Obvious fraud.
The Republicans cheated.
It was the Russians again.
The news media stabbed us in the back.
Pure propaganda. Ohio State isn't in the 12th Congressional District. Unless NBC is saying students will illegally vote in the wrong district.
The lies and misinformation of the fake media machine never stops .
Dems are seeing this as Republicans would see it if a Republican had lost to Nancy Pelosi in the same way.
But these weird elections are being won and lost more on turnout than anything else. This one is a prime example.
I seriously doubt turnout will be an issue for the R’s in November.
I, for one, totally support them in their quest for moral victories.
As long as we can squeak out the real ones with at least a single vote, then good on them!
THE COMMIES ARE COMMING, THE COMMIES ARE COMMING..!!!
This is one of the reasons I enjoy listening to Dan Bongino.
He makes a point of using Twitter as a leftist weather vane, and has key Leftist people he follows, then using what they say as a guide, tells his listeners what to expect to see and hear from the Left.
A couple of weeks ago, when the good economic data came out, he said: watch what the left does. They won’t be able to attack Trump on the performance of the economy, so they are going to look for something else, and that something else was...wages (which is described as a lagging indicator)
Sure enough, like clockwork, I began to see opinion pieces and interviews from leftists that said “Oh, sure. GDP growth is up, but the REAL key to how people are really doing is to watch wages, and wages are only going up a paltry...”
And so it was, first thing yesterday morning: They are going to tout this close loss as a moral victory.
Yes indeed.
Love it. I know you can do the same thing by watching all the alphabet networks and reading the NY Times and LA Times, and I cannot and will not do that, it turns my stomach. I am beginning to think of Dan Bongino as “Trump’s Crystal Ball”!
Bongino’s podcast is great.
My impression is that many taxpayers (read Republican voters) are squeezing in an August vacation and not very plugged into these odd summer primaries but participation will rise in Nov.

blah blah blah blah Democrats blah blah blah
media always rooting for Democrats.
Always
They brought out 87% of their voters and they still lost.
Yes turn out WILL be up in Nov. And 87% of Dems turned out in Ohio 12 this week while only 40% of Rs did.
Higher turn out is not going to help Ds. The whole problem has been Gops voters not bothering to show up for special elections.
How much did the Democrats spend on this race to come in 2nd? Balderson was a weak candidate and still won thanks to PDJT.
I’m with you.
I pretty much stopped watching regular television altogether around 1998 as well (except for one sports event a week in the fall)
My wife still watches, and I peek at the news as she watches just to see what THEY think is important, but usually not more than 15 seconds a day!
I cannot watch a movie with commercials any more. If my wife says “Hey, this movie is on” and it is on network television, I invariably end up renting the movie and streaming it.
Funny, when we go somewhere to eat, and they ask us where we want to sit, I usually say “As far away from any television as possible.”
But I see CNN on, because you can’t avoid it in some places, and boy, does it look like Donald Trump is living rent-free in their empty skulls...they are obsessed!
Isn’t it? I have a hard time listening to Rush, Levin, or many others (though for sheer irreverence, I enjoy listening to Steven Crowder!)
I am one of the people who began listening to Bongino at episode #628!
My thought with this race is as follows regarding the GOP candidate (and the party bosses themselves):
“If I get too close to Trump, that will fire up the Democrat base, and they will come out in huge numbers to ‘teach Trump a lesson’, so I’m going to keep some distance”
The problem with that rationale is that there is virtually no Democrat base left that IS NOT already coming out in November to ‘teach Trump a lesson’. To put it another way, the ENTIRE Democrat base is coming out in November, whether or not they ever the name “Trump” again...just as they were about to do here in Ohio both before the election (when their loser tied it up), and during the election.
So we might as well give up on the suppression angle - they won’t be suppressed - they are coming out. The only question now is whether OUR CANDIDATES understand that and use their BEST WEAPON, a Mr. Donald J. Trump, to bring out our side - because that is the ONLY variable remaining in the race. Do we bring our side out to vote (in other words have Trump barnstorming), or do we sit back and watch the Dems roll out the victories?
