Yeah. All these comedians and political satirists out of work, and Ocasio-Cortez comes and hands it out for free.

Little understood on FR is that the so called “Progressive Caucus is the caucus of the Democrat Socialists in the House along with Bernie Sanders from the Senate.

Nancy Pelosi belonged to and was an officer in the Progressive Caucus until she decided to go for the Speakership whereupon she disassociated herself from the caucus.

Retired Col./Fmr. congressman Allen West made reference to the caucus saying there were ~80 communists serving in the House. Rep West was targeted, and lost that seat in the next election for letting the cat out of the bag. That was then.

This is now. Trump has driven the commies from cover. They’re out in the open now having lost all sense in their hatred for Trump.

People here need to understand A O-C never said cut *ALL* defense spending, that’s a false quote ...

Actually, the meme is a joke... you see, she misunderstands the word 'defense' and thinks it means 'the fence': as in on the border with Mexico... otherwise known as 'the wall'.

Oh... never mind... :)

This woman is so stupid, she's funny; however, her ideology is so reprehensible, it's frightening.

Not sure what you think was a scam. It’s legal to sublet a controlled apartment, with the landlord’s permission, and it’s also legal for adult offspring to move in with their parents.

There are plenty of scams but you haven’t mentioned one.

That’s a frightening thought, that half the country could be even stupider than she is.

I am of the belief that rent controlled apartments, like public housing, could not be sublet, but that rent stabilized apartments could be (at least in NYC).

Rent control has been a struggle to phase out. More than twenty years ago, there were many tens of thousands still rent controlled, often at absurdly low rates from WWII. Illegal secret sublets were common in rent controlled apartments to people outside the nuclear family, because they were so valuable (like paying $100/month in Manhattan for a big apartment, and charging $2,100 to the sub).

Guiliani and Bloomberg finally sun-setted (or identified fraud) of most of the rent controlled apartments. Now the great bulk are rent stabilized (much closer to market rates). Rent controlled rates often stayed frozen far below what was required to pay for legally mandated expenditures like tax, heating oil, and maintenance. No one would buy a guaranteed money loser apartment building, so owners only choices were to walk away in bankruptcy, or burn it down for insurance.

The fires ravaged swathes of the South Bronx and Coney Island, leaving some neighborhoods looking like burned out cities from WWII.

If you started out with a really low rent, you were fine in rent control, with a 7% increase a year. I had a huge studio across from the Morgan mansion and soon found it getting out of my range.

I moved in with roommates. Disaster. Tried it again. Disaster. Now happily in rent stabilization for the past 40 years. Don’t ask.

I hear about lots of scams. I wonder why people talk about them. It’s like they’re bragging!

The scams are run by the people with the sublease as well as the subletters. Common one: Act like a rube and a dope. Agree to the rent you are charged and seem delighted with it. Immediately upon signing, get in touch with the state agency that handles these things and find out what rent your apartment dweller is paying. When you find out it’s a fraction of what it’s supposed to be judging by your own share, you are able to live rent-free for months and months while your apartment holder tries to evict you. You can get in touch with the landlord for further leverage.

Of course if you do this you have to be careful that you are dealing with a nonviolent apartment holder.

Before we get too complacent, I remember thinking the same thing about Obama back in 2007/2008. Remember now, all those Obama voters are still out there.

The ignorance of youth today is appalling.

One told me the other day that Communism in Russia failed simply because of sanctions. Moreover, the Communists pulled Russia out of feudalism. (I told him that life before the Revolution was actually better; the country was industrializing, the people becoming educated. It was only WWI that got the Communists in power.)

Plenty of these kids would vote for AOC in a heartbeat.

May God damn the law under which rent can be controlled!

The rest of your post is irrelevant.

Right now there is a different reason for keeping it than there was before: We have over 60,000 homeless. That’s the other side of NYC that the tourists don’t see.

In fact, someone was telling me the other day that there are many more than that. Sixty thousand are the ones that are accounted for somehow, because they live in a Tier II or they sleep in a Tier I.

All you really need is a job and a membership in a gym, where you can shower and change. You ride the subways to get your sleep. The 1 Train is no longer the best for that. I’m not going to tell which one is the best one now. All the seats would be taken and my friend who told me this, who has a classy degree by the way, would no longer be able to find a place.

So, in a word, controlled rent or else untold disaster. There would be about 2 million more people without a place to live.
