My PC has been running slowly at times during the past several months. Some time ago, I thought I had done enough troubleshooting to conclude I needed more RAM, so I added 4GB and now have 8GB.
However, the slowness continues. Now I see that when I am loading a new web page in my browser, or a web page update with new content, the CPU usage goes up to 70-90%, and that is when it slows for a while.
I have tried using Waterfox (64-bit version of Firefox) and Edge with the same symptoms and results, so it isn't being caused by the browser.
RAM is nowhere near 100% in use when the slowness happens, or at anytime.
I have a Lenova All-in-One PC that has an Intel Pentium G2030 dual core 3.00GHz processor. The 1TB hard drive has 800GB free space.
Why would the CPU use increase to upwards of 90% at times? Is that normal, or could it be an indication that the PC or the CPU has a problem?
Or is there a setting or two somewhere that would help with this issue?
I had temps at 180 degrees and noticed the cpu fan was not tight. I bought a better fan and the temp dropped to just below 100 degrees. 111 is not high.

How to scan and repair system files on Windows 10
The following command will do a full scan of the protected system files on your computer and fix any file that are causing issues while Windows 10 is up and running.
Use the Windows key + X keyboard shortcut to open the Power User menu and select Command Prompt (Admin), as you will need administrator permissions to run SFC.

It’s not an AV problem, only one is running, Webroot.
Cleaned cache, no change. I keep Task Manager open. Windows has several dozen little craplets. No clue which I can deactivate without causing other problems.
So, I might be forced to buy a new PC or laptop?

Hmmmm, I’ll give Brave another try. Last time I tried it, it wasn’t anywhere near ready for prime time.

Deleted History. No change.
Installed Brave. It seems to be better than the 1st time I tried it.
Actually, so far, Brave seems to be MUCH better than either Waterfox or Edge.
However, even though my pages are not showing a slowdown, in Task Manager, CPU is still going way high, even up to 100% at times. But no slowdown.
So, the slowdown in the other browsers is not being caused by CPU cycles getting all used up.
Another thing with anti-virus programs.
If you are running another anit-virus program other than Windows Defender make sure you disable Windows Defender otherwise they will conflict and cause you problems.
Made that mistake.
It’s not great but probably not indicative of a temp related issue.
Brave has had a couple updates.
It maybe your video card is getting overloaded rather than your CPU.
Brave is filtering out a lot of advertising graphics and allowing the webpage to render faster.
I’m not sure if anyone else suggested running chkdsk but often bad file descriptors can add to this problem. Delete all temp files and clear browser history first. In Win 10 you can right click my computer, right click the os drive (usually C:) select the tools tab and go from there.

I haven’t shopped for a video card in a long time but you can always upgrade.
Do me a favor. With task manager up, sorted by CPU usage, trigger one of the spikes and grab a screenshot. List of either here or privately the list of things and their percentages at the top of the list. Say the top 10.
