Musk totally screwed the pooch and it’s specifically because their stock is probably going to leave a large smoking hole in the ground unless he could swing a privatization with a big money source and get out from under it while it still held a decent percentage of its peak value.
He had to have had a few in him to tweet that because that kind of statement creates a self perpetuating feedback loop. The price will drop from holders bailing and the potential buyer will see that and hold out for a lower price. It’s bad enough if your just having some doldrums/crappy quarters, but it’s death if you firehose money consistently.
