How very uninclusive of them...
This always cracks me up:
Big effing deal.
The space station people will be so pleased to finally be able to go out on the shuttle and get a quick pair of taquitos and a squishy.
Am I correct that cosmonauts come from Russia, and astronauts from the first world? I think Indian space travelers would be kasamanauts, from the Hindi term kasamas, but that's speculation on my part.
In any case, I wish them well.
India seems to be making nice progress towards a fully reusable launch stack. They will probably be second after Spacex.

Curry-flavored outer space, ommmmmm.
You raise an excellent point.
With so many people in India living in dire poverty this decision is not going to be universally popular.
Russia and China are also relatively poor countries per capita. Putting a man in orbit is not that difficult for a country that already has a good missile program, as all three do. The question is to what purpose? Manned spaceflight has largely been a waste of money. The ISS is winding down. The moon is old news. Going to Mars is a suicide mission.
Huge percentage of their population does #2 outside in the street ... manned space flight ... what could go wrong?
How about spending the money to clean your absolutely DISGUSTING sh!thole excuse of a country first?
If Indian coders write the software they will only get one shot at it and the assumptions (weather, trajectory, etc.) had better not change.
What is funny is that the astronaut will have use of a toilet when his fellow countryman do not....
Maybe if they hire SpaceX..
There was an astronaut named José Jiménez, and I think he might have changed his name? From Apu Nahasapeemapetilon os something like that?
A long interview with Mr Jimenez:

In 2022, India, a nation of 1.3 billion, will send a man into space.
Three years later, Holland, a country of 6.5 million, will launch a colonizing mission to Mars.
Pretty much tells you everything you need to know about the present level of technocracy in India.
