Movie Review -- Crazy Rich Asians

This is my personal assessment of this movie. Run, don't walk, to see this hilarious romantic comedy in your nearest theatre. I haven't laughed so hard in a movie theatre in years. My husband enjoyed it as much as I did.

I need to see it again, since many of the jokes are culturally based, but there was enough there to keep just about anybody entertained. It received a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Many of the reviewers seemed to have Asian names, so it doesn't look like they were offended at the humor. The audience where I viewed it was cheering at the end.

It's about a Chinese American professor and her Singaporean boyfriend who turns out to be the most eligible bachelor in Asia and her struggle to be deemed worthy by his mother and grandmother.

I would describe this movie as a light-hearted cross between Mafia Wives and Blazing Saddles from a Chinese angle. The humor is mostly clean with only an occasional few ribald moments. There is even a Donald Trump joke in there that I assure you will not offend any Trump supporter (a difficult accomplishment for Hollywood these days).

This movie was so funny that I would like to see a sequel. What happens after they marry? Where do they live? How did Astrid's life turn out? I want more, more, more about this family. When was the last time a movie made me want more? I can't remember...that's when.

Yes, thanks.

Sorry about that.

I was referring to the Wedding Banquet not Eat Drink Man Woman.

I will second it again, Eat Drink Man Woman is a very good movie. And premised on heterosexual relations.

To my mind the trailer makes it look very bad. Like typical Hollywood crap.

It seems to me this movie is about trying to co-opt East Asian Americans in to the liberal Borg, the liberal swamp.

The WSJ reviewer loved it.

“Crazy Rich Asians,” a movie about people who have it all, succeeds in having almost all on its own ambitious terms. Bright, buoyant and hilarious, though far from flawless, this romantic comedy, directed by Jon M. Chu and based on the popular novel by Kevin Kwan, is also a cultural milestone. It’s the first major studio film since “The Joy Luck Club” opened almost a quarter-century ago in which an Asian filmmaker has told an Asian-American story with Asians in all of the leading roles. The result is hugely enjoyable, and hooray for Hollywood for making it happen.”

I attended a party where they bought the theatre and invited all their friends

What a great idea! It would make a terrific Birthday or Anniversary Party.

I loved the movie - gives me hope the Chinese will be the next super power and not some $h!+hole country.

Spoiler alert on the Climax scene (Mahjong Game): The prospective daughter gives up her love, because her prospective mother in-law doesn’t believe she is willing to sacrifice for family. She tells her prospective mother-in-law she’s giving up her love to keep family together.

At that point, the mother-in-law realizes she is willing to sacrifice all for family.

This movie is a slap in the face to those who claim ‘Diversity is our strength’, it’s not - Unity is our strength.

Just saw it on the plane. Didn’t like it.

Too much snazziness, looking at rich people partying. Nice lead pair though, they can act, pity the material isn’t that good
