MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Some say inhaling nitrogen gas would be like dying on a plane that depressurizes in flight, swiftly killing all aboard. Now more than a quarter of Alabama’s death row inmates have signed statements saying they would prefer that gas over lethal injection or the electric chair when facing execution.
No inmate in the U.S. has been put to death with nitrogen gas before, and critics suspect at least some inmates are simply hoping to delay a date with the death chamber through the inevitable legal challenges ahead.
State corrections officials say 51 of Alabama’s 180 inmates have chosen nitrogen hypoxia, allowed a choice after Alabama lawmakers voted this year to authorize that alternative execution method. With difficulties obtaining execution drugs and litigation arising over claims of botched and horribly painful chemical injections this decade, Alabama is not alone as it joins Oklahoma and Mississippi in exploring that as a potential alternative.
John Palombi, an attorney with the Federal Defenders Program, said his group advised inmates to request the uncertainties of nitrogen gas over what he called the known “torture” of Alabama’s three-drug cocktail. They had a June 30 deadline to make a choice.
“Our decision to have our clients opt into use of nitrogen hypoxia was based on our belief that a three drug lethal injection protocol … is torturous and has tortured our clients,” Palombi wrote in an email, citing last year’s execution of Torrey McNabb and Ronald Smith Jr.’s the year before.

No, that’s not correct. Excess CO2 triggers the need to take a breath. In other words, you know it when the CO2 level goes too high.
With nitrogen you don’t have that reaction.
I can assure everyone personally that you won't know or feel a thing. My wife rescued me.
Don’t know that an entire chamber would be required to be filled with nitrogen the way the traditional cyanide gas chamber was. Just strap the POS to an immovable chair, seal a mask over his face, and turn on the nitrogen. Permanent nitey nite.

Back in the early 80s (before lock out/tag out) the semiconductor facility I worked at had a fixture clean room with masks fed by house air. Unfortunately the lines were purged with nitrogen and the facilities person never switched back to air. 2 techs died, never knew they were being suffocated.
How about wood chipper. Or bongo bongo.
Or use pure helium. No idea what the side effects would be but the imate’s last words would be hilarious.
A few years ago I read an article about some inspectors that went into the hold of a ship that was full of scrap iron. The rusting iron had removed all the O2 from the air. They were unconscious in 15 seconds and died.
F-that, “eye for an eye”. Those on death row are subhumans who extinguished life of others with not a care in the world.

Personally, I favor a variation on the Teddy Kennedy method. Drop an air-tight container into 10 feet of water, then break the seal.
Painful? Oh, well. I’m sure the victim(s) of the condemned’s crime(s) endured some serious physical and possibly mental pain.
It’s a new way for Execution in the US. They should try it and see how it goes.

Ask anyone who has almost died from carbon monoxide poisoning - it’s horrible - worst headache ever, severe nausea, throwing up - least painful?

Helium will kill you. I know of someone who killed themselves that way. You just fall asleep and suffocate.
I prefer that states have the option of the firing squad: cheap, reliable, effective.
Gases however, have a problem. They work off the assumption that the condemned will hold their breath, then gulp in the gas. However, in Arizona, a prisoner just continued to breathe normally, cyanide gas, and died a horrific death of suffocation, quite obvious to observers.
