Good question. At the risk of answering a rhetorical, there are still plenty of people who don’t have a clue or, more often, only look at the price tag. They are the same people who look like refugees in their $8 t-shirts and $10 sneakers. They may have the money but they’re obsessed with the price of everything and think they’re ‘saving.’

The properties known as grind joints in Vegas are counting on these people to buy stay-and-play package deals and suckers’ come-ons like $25 in ‘free’ casino credit. They play 5-10-25 cent slots and video poker and might play $2 blackjack.

It keeps the lights on - barely - and the crypt-keeper dealers keep showing up. The decor, the carpet, etc. are literally threadbare and at least one property relies on an individual dealer’s iPod piped through the PA rather than pay ASCAP/BMI fees or music-stream subscriptions.

I get Room Comp offers all the time for The Rio an the other Caesars Properties.

I think I'll just stay at the Trump Hotel next time I go to Vegas.

I live in MA, i’ve been to Las Vegas a bunch times since 2000.
I’ve stayed at the Venetian 3 times, Aria once, Paris a few times, The Mirage once, the Flamingo a few times and Harrahs 3 times. Out of all them the most comfortable bed was at the Golden Nugget.
out of all of them i actually liked Harrah’s the best, rent a room in the old holiday Inn building with a balcony overlooking the small pool for short money with the other 3 nights comped for free.
CLEAN, CHEAP, and right in the middle of the action.
I would look across at the people at that old stinkhole Imperial Palace and ask myself why?
Same with people at the old Riviera, Circus Circus, Excalibur etc.
I’m on the shuttle leaving the airport and i hear all these people listing off their sh!thole hotels and i just shake my head.
Sure the Venetian, Wynn, Bellagio are frigging awesome and expensive but i can always go there and hang out for as long as i want, maybe not enjoy the enmities like pool and spa but whatever i’ll still take Harrah’s.
you want a nice pool the Flamingo has a nice pool and it’s free.
Anyways i just need a clean place to sleep...

Speaking of $8 t-shirts and $10 sneakers that is one thing i have really noticed.
the Vegas clientele decorum has REALLY dropped even since 2000 when i first started going.
Every year it gets worse and worse the last time being the worst(which was around 5 years ago).
People walking around looking like they just crawled out off a Goodwill receptor, mexicans everywhere...Just the reason why i haven’t been back since.
I’m not paying good money for that, told the GF that yea we could stay at the Wynn and never leave but i’m not like that.
Lately i spend my money on short trips to the NH lakes and VT mountains, the beautiful Maine coast...
video poker is now right up the street.

Wynn is certainly nice—have stayed there. But its surrounding area looks like a bombed out war zone due to razing of buildings and prep for construction. That said, I’m not sure growing the so-called North Strip area makes much sense when the existing properties are struggling.

Part of LV’s problems are the same problems everywhere else - politicians and their soft touch for criminals, vagrants and illegals. But the only reason LV exists is tourism so I submit there are and will always be special circumstances allowing wider latitude to deal with the problems.

A judge who actually believes that Mexicans blocking the sidewalk handing out hooker flyers is an example of free speech is unfit to sit on the bench.

Yea i remember that illegal mexican hooker card ruling.
funny you mention the Wynn surroundings, there is a identical Wynn being built right here outside of Boston in the Sh!thole town of Chelsea right on top of a former toxic waste dump surrounded by slums, oil tanks and illegals.
They say it will open in a year.
MGM just opened their billion dollar casino/hotel last weekend plop square in the middle of downtown sh!thole Springfield, MA.
I wonder what the Vegas odds are for when the first gang shooting will be.
Probably more cops in there than gamblers...

The Kardashian types love it because it has a supposedly seriously cool rooftop bar/nightclub.
i would rather walk out the front door onto the strip and not have to take a shuttle bus to get there.

I visited the RIO once during the day time and it seemed like we were the only two people in the place.
