killing her husband by putting eye drops into his water for several days....
Well it's not as if she killed him in a blink of an eye.
I am, however, surprised she couldn't keep a lid on her nefarious plan.
Punishment? 40 lashes.
Yes that's seafaring jargon but one must have a sense of aqueous humor, right?

I think the police should not have divulged information about the eye drops.
But, that's just me.

I hate to tell you all this but you could drink cups of visene with no nasty side effects other than a tummy ache. It is a myth to keep waitresses sane. When they have a nasty customer they will sprinkle some on their food. It is a complete and utter myth spread by people higher in the house to keep Miss Sally from bashing the ahole in the head with a coffee cup.
Now you know.

After the movie Wedding Crashers came out with the cool lead characters poisoning a romantic rival with eye drops with “hilarious” results... we responded to a rash of related medical calls. They were mostly teenagers and assorted other idiots who sometimes actually drank the eyedrops themselves, but were mostly the victims of their acquaintances who did it as a “joke”.
The stuff is very dangerous and can cause real and sometimes permanent damage, unconsciousness, and even death as this story illustrates. My assumption is that this woman was trying to torture her husband and not kill him.

If you’re putting this stuff in your eyes, wouldn’t it be bad for you, too?

I am somewhat skeptical. The LD50 (dose at which half the test subjects die) is 345 mg drug per kg body weight in mice (oral dose); in rats, it is 785 mg/kg. Visine is a 0.05% solution of tetrahydrozoline, which would be 7.5 mg in a 15 mL bottle. If the husband weighed 75 kg (165 lbs), he would have had to consume 25,875 mg, or almost 26 g of the drug. According to my back of the envelope calculations, he would have had to have consumed over 13 gallons of Visine to have reached an LD50. The rate at which tetrahydrozoline is excreted from the body is an unknown, but unless its half life is measured in days or longer, it is highly unlikely that the dose would have reached an LD50 even if she had given him nothing but Visine to drink every day.
I suppose he could have had a bad heart or some other condition that could have been exacerbated by the tetrahydrozoline, but I seriously doubt he was killed by the drug alone.
If anyone wants to see the calculations, I’ll be happy to provide them.
