The same sort of people who use transit in this country are people who won’t take care of stuff given to them.... Another group is paying for the transit so they give no f**ks about not tossing their trash or taking a dump on the subway.
Mass transit works in Japan because there is deep cultural cohesion and shame for misbehavior.

Only the crazy people ride the bus...that was the saying in Seattle when I lived there.
Americans have become more prosperous in those years. In 1946 there was a Recession on, or rather the tail end of the Great Depression. A far larger percentage of the population in 2018 can afford and avails itself of private transportation i.e. cars and mootorcycles.
