I watch a huge amount of British detective videos and, of course, Downton Abbey and the like.
Plus, I am fascinated with accents and dialects.
If you are also an accent/dialect nerd like me, this video is for you.
As an aside, I grew up in South Georgia. Lot's of thick accents.
I think they were used by locals to say something about their being locals (like virtue signalling with the Radical Left). They are saying that they are members of the local club. Lot's of "ha bad it" 's (that means "how about it") and "I heard dat" (yep, that means just what is says).
This lady explains the difference between accent and dialects...but they are so closely connected that it is hard to tease them apart.
That said, growing up, I developed an ear for accents. I could tell, for the most part, if someone happened to be from middle Georgia, Savannah, South Georgia (of course), Virginia, low country South Carolina.
I spent most of my career in NYC and could discern an outer borough from a Joisey accent.
Connecticut was easy because I always thought I might be from Connecticut...and I did have a house there for some time. And it felt like home.
Also, from a base in NYC, I could also detect various New England twangs...and all their differences ("can't get there from he-ah" and "pahk the cah.")
Anyway, hope you accent nerds enjoy this video as much as I did.
Start with:
“THE. RAIN. IN. SPAIN. STAYS. MAINLY. IN. THE. PLAIN.”

Is this where Madonna picked up her insane accent ?
Love ya, Rooster, but as someone born in NYC, spent her entire working career in NYC, I still could not tell you the difference between a NY accent and a Jersey accent until we get down to around the Philadelphia area. Oh! How I hate that Jersey/PA accent!
This might interest you.
I’m amazed by how some actors/actresses can keep a credible “foreign” accent during a performance.Every time I try to mimic a British accent I sound like an Aussie.
Nice. An opening for me to post these...

My parents and aunts/uncles all grew up in Boston and I grew up in Greater Boston and have lived my entire life in Eastern Massachusetts. However,if I had a nickel for every time I've been asked if I was from New York I'd be living in Beverly Hills right now.
I love accents and dialects. Cant watch video right now but I will save for later.
I grew up a valley girl but without the accent. my mom was an audiologist and very well spoken so that helped. There was at my high school a big surfer contingent which also had a local accent (think Spiccoli, Sean Penns character in Fast Times at Ridgement High). And there were many, many NYC accents in my neighborhood. Lots of transplants.
I had to learn the Swiss German dialect and it took about 5-6 years of heavy listening and copying to do it.
LOL! Thanks! You’re saying that because I was married to a Brit for a bit, yes? ;o]
At one time I would have found this appealing. Now I ask have to ask, wh6?

No, because you watch the British detective shows. It would be fun to be able to identify each actor’s accent.
I've been a huge fan of British TV and drama for 40+ years. The only accents I can clearly identify are Cockney,Received Pronunciation,Scottish and Northern Ireland.
We here on the NJ/PA border have a bad accent because we talk to people from NJ/NY with disdain in our voices.
Sorry, it’s an awful accent.
The Joisey accent (which I happen to love) changes as you drive down the toinpike. And if you go west in Joisey, there is a New England/Upstate NY twang that sets in.
But God forbid you go for a drive and end up in the Catskills.
"Oy vey"!
No sure what that means.
That said, Robert Downey Jr did a fine job in his Sherlock Holmes performances.
A little stiff perhaps, but still fine.
