We didn’t close down any pipelines. We’re building an additional $9 billion pipeline to Vancouver and the court said we have to settle a couple thing before we can finish.
That pipeline is to supply Asia

Pipeline Route Capacity
Enbridge Mainline Alberta to Wisconsin 2.5 million barrels/day
TransCanada Keystone Alberta to Illinois 591,000
barrels/day
Those are the 2 biggest pipeline that send oil from Alberta to the US and then there are smaller ones that I won’t bore you with.
Alberta has the 3rd largest recoverable oil deposits in the world.
I don’t know what your 65% number is about

That’s not true and you probably know it. It takes an extra step in the refining process and it’s made into the same gas and diesel as any other oil. Not all refineries can handle that so we sell them conventional oil. We have both types.

Show me anything that backs up your assertion that we somehow get Canadian oil at 40% below market price for that quality of oil.

I don’t believe it, nor can you prove it, so you don’t believe it, either.

US exports more to Canada than they do to any other country in the world. We buy twice as much from you as China does. Canada is the largest export customer of 36 States. That’s a lot of people and American Manufacturing companies that will be hurt.

I’ll give my support:

“WCS prices at a discount to WTI because it is a lower quality crude (3.51Wt. percent sulfur and 20.5 API gravity)[52] and because of a transportation differential. The price of WCS is currently set at the U.S. Gulf Coast. It costs approximately $10/bbl for a barrel of crude to be transported from Alberta to the U.S. Gulf Coast, accounting for at least $10/bbl of the WTI-WCS discount. Pipeline constraints can also cause the transportation differential to rise significantly.”

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_Canadian_Select

The quality sucks and there’s now so much cheaper, better, sweeter oil available.

The price for Canada’s very heavy crude is market price, not a discount. Period.

I’m the totally aware of the mess that Trudeau has made of the pipeline and everything else.I was born in Alberta and still live here. I was just saying we didn’t shut down any existing pipelines although there are many Canadians that would like to see that happen. If Trudeau can’t get the pipeline built the next government will. One more year.

OK I read or skimmed as much of your Wikipedia as could but I’m not a chemist so I don’t know how you came up with “the quality sucks”.

Canadian oil is selling to the US for $38.83 per barrel today so I’ll let you do the math. I have 6 kids on IPads and laptops and I don’t think it’s homework their doing.

It’s not value added parts, it’s pass thru goods. China ships goods to a Canadian port and their put on a train or trucks and sent to the US. No money changes hands but it goes on the books as a Canadian export. It should be counted as a Chinese export but the US has their own way of doing things. You can read about it on the US trade website. The same website will tell you that the US has a trade surplus with Canada of about $8 billion.

Many years ago, I read a novel about folks sabotaging pipelines going from Canad to America and at the end, the American President “welcomes” Canada as the latest American acquisition....

This is a pretty balanced overview and shows a deficit of $18 billion with Canada - not the largest but not a fair situation between “ friends”

https://www.thebalance.com/trade-deficit-by-county-3306264

A major beef is Canada accepting cheap Chinese goods being dumped there, then exporting them to the US under “ NAFTA”. Canada needs to stop already or get some grown ups with economic sense to figure out a compromise instead of flinging moose chips and calling Trump names behind his back and to his face

The article wants to blame Trump for “ starting” a trade war
Given that we have been underwater in trade deficits since 1975 and are now running over half a trillion - annually - I’d say most woke Americans would see we have been in a trade war for a long time and losing badly

TPTB Accepted as a cost of subsidizing our “ friends” until Trump challenged this

The interest on the national debt is consuming our budget with only worse to come

it’s all about relative pain should a temporary trade war erupt and who has the best staying power ... it’s the main reason President Trump super-charged our economy BEFORE he took steps to force fair trade with our trading partners ...

Here’s what the US Government says about trade with Canada

https://ustr.gov/countries-regions/americas/canada

U.S. goods and services trade with Canada totaled an estimated $673.1 billion in 2017. Exports were $340.7 billion; imports were $332.3 billion. The U.S. goods and services trade surplus with Canada was $8.4 billion in 2017.
