Truth: I was bused to an integrated middle school that formerly had been a black high school. Because I had skipped a grade and not yet hit my growth spurt, I was small. At the school were 15, 16, and 17 year old black 8th graders, with facial hair and criminal records. Mostly an OK experience, except gym class, and flag football games in particular, which were definitely “Mind if we dance with yo’ dates?” occasions.

In jr. high, Dallas, TX decided the poor widdle black kiddies weren’t getting the education that the whites were so they, in all their brilliance, decided to bus blacks to white schools and whites to black schools. Didn’t matter that I lived 4 houses from my jr. high and high schools and that I wouldn’t be allowed to attend my neighborhood high school until my senior year. I lucked out being bused in 8th grade so got to continue at my old jr. high. But it wasn’t my old jr. high where nothing exciting happened and everyone behaved themselves. Oh, no. It was a zoo. You laid something down and it disappeared in a second. There was no stopping to say hi to your friends between classes or you’d get harassed. It didn’t matter about fire laws, we were locked inside our classrooms the second the bell rang to be safe from someone coming into the room - this was in the early 70s so way before school shootings. They also pulled down metal gates to block the hallways during class times.

Surprise, we moved out of Dallas to conservative podunkville that summer.

Many years later, I drove through the old Dallas neighborhood to show our kids. Just saying, we kept the doors locked and didn’t tarry.

Podunkville has also changed during the years. It’s now chocked full of illegals. Snort, I moved to the middle of nowhere to raise our family and, of course, it’s been found by Californian and Austin liberals... sigh. Just can’t win.

I am mixed and my husband was white. Our son looked like a little white boy. Once, when he was about 14, we got off the trolley in front of the corner store and these big black men all turned around and said ‘hi’ to my son by name. I was a little freaked, but smiled and told him to keep walking.

When we got home, I asked how did those men know him?

Turns out they were his same age and he knew them from his old school. 14 and as tall and full-bodied as men!
