My first reaction to that is that it looks like an unnamed diseased body part, but then I realized it also resembles certain figures who recently dominated the news...

I like Zubrin’s point that Columbus’ discovery of America made it a far better place than it was, or probably ever could have become. Let’s not worry about the bugs on Mars!

Man has to build a rocket to safely travel to Mars but ‘bus’ only have to hitchhike or stowaway to make the return journey of same distance.

As Zubrin says, they’ve been deep underground on Mars for billions of years. They haven’t evolved to infect humans, or any animals living on Earth, and wouldn’t be a problem for us.

This is similar to bacteria deep inside Earth that wouldn’t know what to do with us if it encountered us; it wouldn’t say, “Oh, let’s go infect that guy!” They wouldn’t know how to do that even if the thought occurred to them. We’ve lived “side-by-side” on Earth with them for billions of years (geological processes do bring them to the surface once in a while) and never has their DNA turned up in a sick person, which might indicate infection.

A pathogenic species and “victim” species have to evolve together, continuously, for a long time in order for the pathogen to be able to infect the victim. Well, at least, that’s what I get out of listening to Zubrin in this video.

Great post.

In the minds of most people (that’s the rational ones) the chief impediment to a Mars colony is TECHNICAL.

I think as the perceived feasibility of the Marse Colony challenge builds, another question will get sharper and sharper:

“Will mankind WORSEN Mars in some sense and therefore, SHOULD this infection we know as civilization go there..?”

The insane people who ponder that (or pretend to, hoping to signal their greater virtue or to be somehow be BOUGHT OFF by more productive types) have lots of influence.

Most people have barely heard of this central question and we need to smash the trolls before we spend too much money along this path.

They’re going to be a YUGE obstacle.

Finally! Someone addresses the main point of this video. Thank you!

Yes, I really like Zubrin for what he says about... well, let’s face it... liberal stupidity. I hope conservatives give him a chance. Though a big proponent of going to Mars, he’s clear-headed and sees right through liberal crap.

This is a change, Zubrin used to say, why stop colonization because of some native life, that’s insane!

If he really said that, he's just displaying scientific ignorance -- one has nothing to do with the other.

Just make sure Mars isn’t put in the Ninth Circus Court of Appeals. They’d issue an order that humans can’t use the water, even if it’s OK.
