All eyes are focused on Hurricane Florence as we begin the new week and chances for a major impact on the US east coast continue to grow. Florence is now churning slowly towards the US east coast as a category 2 hurricane and may make a landfall late Thursday or early Friday somewhere along the Carolina coastline – likely with “major” hurricane status. Very strong high pressure ridging is now building at upper levels of the atmosphere across southeastern Canada and the northwestern Atlantic and this will be a key player in the push of Florence towards the east coast over the next few days. In addition, this very strong high pressure ridge will eventually act as an “atmospheric brick wall” for Florence once it reaches the east coast and the brakes will be put on any attempt at a northward advance by the storm. This eventual slow down in the northward advance of Florence will allow for an extended period of heavy rainfall and the result could be tremendous rainfall amounts in the Carolinas and much of the Mid-Atlantic region.

That has already started for me in central South Carolina although only likely to be a few inches of rain and a half day of 40-50 mph gusts.
After this weekend - and a whole comng week of forecast showers -I don’t know how the ground can hold any more water here in the DC area.
We are all gonna die........
They better make sure their sump pump is working and has a battery back-up.
East Coast has already been saturated with rainfall this summer so wherever it tracks after landfall, expect a lot of flooding.
And, here in Western Oregon, we just had the first (measurable, barely) rain in over 90 days.
Yep, my back deck is actually damp! Seriously, we need rain - fire danger is still very high out here in the West. Interstate I-5 Delta Fire barely contained, highway still shut down. Scary.
Oh, It’s coming....lol....the rain! Then, everyone will be complaining. But, I am ready. When living near Portland, OR in 1985 we had a summer of 90 days straight of sun...nearly went crazy. I’m from near Seattle...have web feet...can only take so much sun.
Anyhow it was a mad house. Guy was on his cell saying there isn't a case of water in this town. Store manager was on the PA system saying they would get a truckload of water later in the day (time unspecified). Yikes, don't want to see that.
It is interesting what ppl buy - canned Vienna sausage - and other canned meats. Not a bad idea.
Lots of chips. Er not so good.
And vegetables! Who buys squash before a hurricane?
As for me - I did my panic shopping on Saturday.
I bought some water at Wal-Mart early Saturday morning here in Wilmington, NC. At that time they had plenty. Gas stations are now running out of gas.
