Yeah, I noticed that too. Usually the viewer misses that when viewing old movies but this one was set at a slower speed plus the images were quite sharp. Paris was beautiful...but must have also stunk of horse manure.
Horse manure, flies on everything, contaminated water, no germ theory of disease, and an unsatisfactory answer to “Where is the bathroom?” most of the time.
However, it’s true that the people were tidily dressed (if not clean). I think it would be nice if we could have modern sanitation *and* tidy standards of dress in public.
The manure issue was one of the reasons public health advocates of the time urged the adoption of motor vehicles. Today’s environmentalist wackos are too unread to know that.
