They were ghostly. I sometimes have dreams about them.

Why did you think they were ghostly? Just curious.
We rented a beach house in the North Swan Beach section of the 4x4 area last summer, they’re running loose up there. They slept under the bayberry bushes surrounding the piling foundation of the house. The dunes had blown right up to the front porch which was 12 feet off the ground, so we saw them every morning at sunrise, unless the wind was blowing from inland. That’s the best time to see them on the beach. They go on the beach to get into the sea spray to escape mosquitoes. Had some excitement the night before we left out to go home, took the garbage out, didn’t think anything about it, didn’t turn on exterior floodlights. Nearly walked right into the rear end of one sticking out of those bayberries into the drive. Scared the hell out of me, was afraid my dog was going to get kicked or something. The horse seemed fairly unimpressed, just snorted and walked away. Sitting out on the porch at night, you hear them talking to each other back and forth, neighs, answering neighs from one direction, more in another direction. Pretty cool. It’s the so-called 4x4 section, you have to drive up the beach to get there, no real roads just sand. Just below the Virginia border, the last 12 miles of beach after the pavement ends in Corolla.
