The mysterious 11-day closure of a New Mexico solar observatory stemmed from an FBI investigation of a janitor suspected of using the facility's wireless internet service to send and receive child pornography, federal court documents showed on Wednesday.
The National Solar Observatory in Sunspot, New Mexico, was evacuated without public explanation on Sept. 6, leading to a swirl of social media speculation and rumors driven by its proximity to two U.S. military installations and the town of Roswell.
Approximately two hours away from the observatory by car, Roswell was the site of a famous 1947 sighting of unidentified flying objects that the U.S. Air Force later said were top-secret high-altitude weather balloons.
UFO conspiracy lore has it that a flying saucer crashed near Roswell, and that remains of the craft and alien crew were clandestinely removed from the crash site by the government and taken to a top-secret test site in Nevada for examination.
But the mystery of the Sunspot Observatory closure proved far less complicated. It was finally explained in newly unsealed FBI records, including a 39-page application for a warrant to search the suspect's residence.
An agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation wrote in the affidavit that she was "investigating the activities of an individual who was utilizing the wireless internet service of the National Solar Observatory in Sunspot, New Mexico, to download and distribute child pornography."
The FBI affidavit identified the suspect as a janitor under contract to clean the facility, whose laptop was found to have been used to connect to the observatory's wireless system.
According to the affidavit, observatory officials made the decision to close and evacuate the site out of concern that the suspect might pose a danger to other personnel.
The observatory was reopened on Monday.

Then why evacuate homes in the area. Something is not right here.
The only homes evacuated were the homes on the site where staff members live and who were ordered evacuated as a precaution by the AURA consortium which manages the site.......It was not done by law enforcement.....
Now if we can find out which planet was sending child pornography to the janitor, we’ll have proof that alien life exists.
This is total BS. It was ALIEN PORN. What else could it be?
The truth is out there. Trust no one.
Child Porn.
Right.
They found it right after they put it there.
BS! Probably some Chi-com spy operation going on. But why evacuate everything?? Just a BS cover story.
I have an acquaintance who lives 5 miles away from there and he actually WENT there right after the story broke.
The entire place is deserted and the sheriff didnt even stop him. He was sort of sure his plates were run. Now if this were all “child porn” why did everyone leave? Another thing he definitely noticed was a weird smell all over the compound...
BULL S#IT!
Starting from the notion that we can't trust what 'they' say, it's just as likely, something got mailed to this facility and the carrier made various stops along the way and whatever it was that got mailed was found to be leaking, contaminating a wide area. That would at least seem more plausible than the janitor viewing kiddie porn. Who comes up with this sh...stuff?
Maybe space aliens like a little porno. I’m just sayin’
Has anyone ever seen a Grey wearing clothes? They’re always nekkid as jaybirds!
If it were just some janitor on a government computer, then Big Brother NSA would already have everything he searched out and looked at so no need to shut down the whole place for 11 days.
I dunno, that could be their uniform. Maybe they look like this underneath:
The flying saucer incident at Roswell seems to be in June or July of 1947. Al Gore was born March 31, 1948. Has anyone accounted for where his mother was in June and July of 1947?
That’s the official explanation, but I don’t buy it.
