A sociolinguist from Stanford University claims the way African-Americans speak leads to discrimination across the board — in the court system, interactions with police, education, and employment.
Professor John Rickford says “Black Vernacular English” is viewed as less “trustworthy, intelligent and well-educated” than so-called standard “white” English, and that “dismantling this construction is part of the fight for racial justice.”

I’ve been in places where two urban language speakers were talking to each other, and could not understand a word. It’s amazing that they can understand it. It’s like a whole new dialect.
If the HR folks can’t understand what you say they will not be inclined to favor your application over others by people who can speak understandably.

Some 95% of all the personal woe in this world is self-induced. It is obvious to all but those with the meanest of intelligence, that to be understood, one must speak in the language of the marketplace. Failing that, you are not a competent contender for daily commerce, but reduced to the status of a beggar by the roadside.
Duh, guess that “Prof” got a Captain Obvious degree from the university of high school dropouts.

If you watch British television, you see that British blacks speak with British or Caribbean accents, not ‘black’ accents. First time I noticed this was during the 60s when the UN ambassador from Ghana spoke. Close your eyes and you heard an English accent.
Speakers of “Black English” discriminate against black people who speak “White English,” so it’s a wash.
A college classmate, whom I have also worked with as an engineer, is originally from Nigeria and tends to look at the “urban ghetto jive culture” with disgust. When encountering such “jive”, he responds in perfect British Empire English with only a hint of native accent.
Yep, I have several Nigerian friends and they feel the same way.
Strange how African Blacks speak the Queen’s English impeccably. It’s the American Blacks who take pride in speaking Ebonics. Whose fault is that?
