That wouldn't happen today, but Clarence Thomas became a lion during that disgraceful charade -- and he's still going strong almost 30 years later.

Clarence Thomas is my favorite Justice, a close second while Scalia was alive. I'd even go so far as to call him a national treasure.

Arlen Specter's and Orin Hatch's finest hour was getting him through the committee vote.

That was because many of those southern Democratic senators were actually more conservative than a lot of northeastern Republican senators. And those states are now represented by GOP senators. The Democratic party held a majority because it was the big tent party that included a lot of right-wingers. Its conversion to the far left party means that it has consolidated its grip on liberal northeastern and western states, but equally lost ground in conservative southern states.
