Murphy Brown made its primetime return Thursday night and delivered surprisingly modest ratings for CBS, and considerably softer numbers than premieres of similarly hyped yesteryear sitcom revivals in recent seasons (such as NBCs Will & Grace and ABCs Roseanne).
The newsroom sitcom starring Candice Bergen (and included a Hillary Clinton cameo) was seen by 7.4 million viewers and had only a 1.1 rating among adults 18-49 the lowest of the networks two-hour comedy block, slipping from its Mom lead in.
Yet Murphy Brown arguably has the highest name recognition among viewers of any new show this fall (along with the revamp of Magnum P.I.), so one would have expected to see far more sampling for its premiere episode.
By comparison, 2017s return of Will & Grace on NBC after 11 years off the air had more than 10 million viewers and a strong 3.0 rating in the demo. Earlier this year, Roseanne stunned with a massive 18 million viewers and a 5.1 rating in the demo after 20 years off the air.
Murphy Brown which was likewise off the air for 20 years returned following a dramatic day of live Senate Judiciary Committee hearing testimony from Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh and Christine Blasey Ford, who has accused him of sexual assault. The timing might have inspired some viewers to tune into Murphy Browns brand of topical progressive humor, but some would-be fans might have also been drawn to watch primetime cable news coverage of the hearings instead.
More to come
Red wave.
Roseanne premiere: 5.1 in the demo, 18.16 million viewers
Will and Grace premiere: 2.9 in the demo 10.04 million viewers
Murphy Brown premiere: 1.1 in the demo, 7.4 million viewers
Muh Blue Wave.
So, the question is....which is a bigger flop?
Murphy Brown, or Magnum P I? Or should we start to include the Roseanne (without Roseanne) Show?
I never watched that trash the first time around.
Every Democrat is a violent totalitarian thug.
Roseanne threw Trump voters one bone, one time. That was smart marketing. I have little doubt that Roseanne would have gone on to push the same feminist/leftist crap it did in its original form. Restarting Murphy Brown is about like the Democrats running Hillary again in 2020.
Just wondering. I don't watch tv anymore.
TV is already saturated with elderly, unattractive liberals.
Hill in 2020!
Ha.
Whatever that might be, one thing that it is definitely not....is funny.
On behalf of untold millions....No Thanks! Pass!
Murphy Brown did worse I believe.
Hillary was actually a guest on the show and Candace Bergen said it was all about the resistance. What did they expect?
What’s funny is that a few years after the original show ended, Candace Bergen basically admitted that Dan Quayle was right about single parents.
Barney Miller reruns would do better if counted.
bwahahahahahahahaa
An old, fat (once beautiful) actress with corded neck muscles and a dogged delivery that makes John Houseman look like Martin Short returns in a somewhat amusing tv show from 35 years ago and they were expecting a hit?
