I was on active duty in the Army from 1977-1982. We got a flu shot every year. They gave it to us on a Friday so that we would be ill over the week-end on our time and back to work on Monday. Bastards.

The Peace Corps did the same thing. We were headed to Afghanistan—lots of shots. Cholera was the worst for side effects, but rabies wasn’t too much fun either. I was ‘deselected’ the last day of training, so I did not go. Everyone who went was blessed with amoebic dysentery—apparently no vaccine for that.
