Cats will drink out of a toilet bowl. All of my cats have done this. That said, cats are remarkably intelligent, but not in the obsequious manner akin to dogs. If it has to do with hunting or killing (either offensively or defensively), nothing on earth tops a cat. They are designed to hurt and/or kill.

My male cat drinks from the toilet bowl.
Our manx cat drinks water out of the clean toilet bowl daily AND obeys instructions ( on HIS terms, that is).
My dogs have never eaten their own excrement that I have seen.
My cat drinks out of the toilet bowls. She stretches way down to the water line to do so.
Both are pretty dumb, though, except for the dog figuring out how to move concrete blocks to exit his pen or the cat shadowing us in the evening demanding we all go to bed so she can snuggle.
Or drink out of the toilet bowl.
