I thought the difference was more that a meteor is an object hurtling through outer space or the atmosphere, and that a meteorite is what is physically left of it on or in the ground.

Outside the atmosphere, it's "Near Earth Object".

Inside the atmosphere, but above the ground, it's a "Meteor".

On the ground, it's a "Meteorite".

Technically, that big hole in the ground in Arizona should be called "Meteorite Crater".
