You are reading the twitter thread incorrectly.Peterson did indeed say Kavanaugh should step down in reply to a tweet from Weinstein. It was without sarcasm because he retweeted himself, posting 4 hours later, finessing his opinion.

I'm shocked at Peterson's naivety. It's not complex. Kavanaugh is dealing with bullies who are among the most powerful in the country. Stepping down will never "clear" his name. They will never admit they are/were wrong. And anyone Trump puts up, who is conservative, will be deemed divisive.
