It’s encouraging to read the comments below this piece of crap in Yahoo.
John Adams: “We have only the name of masters, and rather than give up this, which would completely subject us to the despotism of the petticoat, I hope General Washington and all our brave heroes would fight.”
As opposed to speaking of the godless mobs of the street rabble, Abigail was speaking about, and to, heterosexual ladies, who were married Christians. She lived during an age where marriage was forever, wives and children were chattel property, and divorce meant that children stayed with their provider father, the divorcing woman a cast-off with no assets, little education and poor economic opportunity outside cottage industries.
She used the word, ‘rebellion’ in her quote, but she did not advocate ‘revolution’ in a George Washington sense of the word. To her, a women’s place in society was married, to support her husband’s household and increase social connections, and to educate and advise her children towards success and honor - all of which demanded education. Because her husband’s frequent travel allowed her liberty to run their farm, she became desireous all women have access not only public education, but also the ability to work outside the home to provide for their own financial needs. She believed it was necessary in order to bring about a better-educated populace, to allow widows, divorcees and the abandoned a path to avoid destitution, and to allow women their own place in society. She was not advocating for free-love, shacking-up, sexual fluidity, prostitution or subjugation of the role of men.
I read about this in a credible anonymous online Internet posting...
That is inciting them to violence. I’m betting there will be soros-financed violence in the next 5 weeks.
John Adams — smart guy — but the original beta male.
Thanks to John Adams for keeping that away from other early Americans. And sadly, his poor, depressed son didn’t resemble him much.
