I remember reading of such a thing happening in Britain. Some guy was whistling “When the Role is called up yonder” when the ground opened and swallowed him.
It was in either Ripley’s Believe It Or Not or Elsie Hix’ Strange As It Seems.
It happened in Florida a few years back.
