I was told “don’t run with scissors.” I guess “don’t run with a lance” is also not bad advice.

Or paper plates.
Or people named Lance.

Everybody that knew him is just dead stunned, President of the Society of Creative Anachronism John Fulton told WLWT. His ability, his skill and his attention to detail and safety is just totaled. Fulton apparently did not prepare his remarks ahead of time.

I’ve heard that, too. It was specifically done to guys that fired the longbow. Without a middle finger, you couldn’t effectively operate one, so they’d chop them off if they captured you.

I’ve portrayed a Mexican Lancer in a movie and the 9 foot lance can be dangerous if one loses it on horseback at a canter. In a Civil War sequence I saw a fellow trooper lose his sword and as it bounced I winced seeing it almost impale the horse. Weapons and horses at speed have some dangerous consequences if something goes array.

Probably apocryphal, but some legend has it that raising the middle finger as an act of defiance had its roots at Agincourt That's interesting - whether true or not, I'm telling my grand kids (They love archery) !!! Thanks !!!!
