A Massachusetts mayor who was first elected at age 23 was charged Thursday with using investments in a company he formed as his "own personal ATM'' to enjoy casinos and adult entertainment, buy a Mercedes, and pay down student loan debt.
Jasiel Correia, the mayor of Fall River, collected more than $360,000 from investors to develop an app that was supposed to help businesses connect with consumers, federal authorities say. Instead, he spent more than $230,000 of the investor funds to bankroll a lavish lifestyle and advance his political career, officials say.
Correia faces nine counts of wire fraud and four counts of filing false tax returns, U.S. Attorney Andrew Lelling announced Thursday.
Special agents with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Internal Revenue Service and U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development assisted in his arrest at his home early Thursday morning.
Despite being in handcuffs, Correia was all smiles as he pleaded not guilty to the federal wire and tax fraud charges Thursday. Outside of Moakley Federal Courthouse afterward, he called the allegations "bogus" and said he will not resign as mayor.
Later in the day, Correia issued a statement proclaiming his innocence and reiterated he is not planning on resigning as mayor.

So many of these old mill towns in MA are in really bad shape.
Massachussett's infamous Portuguese?
Lizzie Bordens hometown. FYI
You didn’t need to know he was a Democrat when other clues gave him away:
1. Mayor of Massachusetts town.
2. Enbezzled funds.
3. Set up lifestyle that involved adult entertainment.
4. Refused to resign when confronted.
A real Clinton/Kennedy wannabe. The kid had some promise.
Dems never do think they do anything wrong.
They justify it all.
Yup, he’ll be the next presidential candidate for the dems when he comes of age.
I’ve been there. We had trouble finding it, so I had to stop and axe for directions.
