RE: Will their ‘gender reveal’ party be a national holiday?

The more interesting questions are:

1) What does it matter, male or female?

2) Are they going to follow the PC crowd and decide to metaphorically tick the “Other” box when it comes to the “gender”?

There was something in the news this AM about the long trip Harry and Meghan are taking, with a lot of engagements each day, and in some places where Zika is a concern. The report said it's okay, but I wonder...you make a good point.

I do hope that Kate and William have excellent security for their children.

FWIW, the Royals fascinate me. It doesn't seem to be a particularly easy or desirable life for those who are at or near the top. That's why Meghan's acting days might serve her well as far as being a Royal is concerned.

This from when King George III first married Sophia Charlotte of Mecklenberg-Strelitz, a black Portuguese Moor.

Wow, I didn't know that! Interesting.

Pinging miss marmelstein... I believe you are an Anglophile?

To be honest, I know more about medieval English monarchs and 20th century ones than I do the 18th century ones.

Maybe np can help out.

Happy to help. :-)

That patently ridiculous TRIPE about King George III's wife, Charlotte, being part black is utterly, unalloyed, complete bovine excrement; not to mention the fact that it is a very recent pile of tosh!

And the screwy report, trying to make Charlotte part "black" is even MORE distant than that of Fauxhantas' "part Cherokee" ancestry; if it is even remotely true. :-)

What an unmitigated CROCK of S**t!

And that Negroid painting is NOT what a Portuguese "BLACKAMOOR" would have looked like!

Re Shakespeare and "OTHELLO"...Yes, Othello was a "Blackamoor"; however, that term refers to people from Northern Africa; dark skinned but NOT Negroids!

Yes, Othello should be played as a North African. Edwin Booth, the greatest 19th century American actor, played him as an Arab and was fairly successful (better as Iago!) I think Paul Robson and Olivier’s portrait of him as practically an African-American with a serious weight problem has influenced actors in the 20th and 21 centuries...

Talking to my actor-husband, he said all actors playing Othello must now be born black, not born Arab or anything else. He speaks not as a politically-correct person but as a actor/producer who would sadly not touch Othello today.

Thanks! :-)

I have a book that contains a vast amount of political cartoons and paintings and pamphlets during the rein of George III and the Prince Regent and it tells thye complete history of political stuff of that era. It's a fascinating book and a HUGE tome. There isn't one single cartoon nor written work about Charlotte having Negroid blood; nothing, nada, zip, zero, bupkiss! And I've been a student of European kings and queens ( from the earliest days ) since I was around 8 years old, so this is something I do know a very great deal about.

Also, IF ( big IF ) Queen Charlotte had any features from an extremely ancient Portuguese ancestor, then that ancestor was as white as white can be. And people who imagine that they can "see" Negroid features, are ignoring all but one or at the most, two paintings and drawings of her. And...they have NO idea what someone of all Caucasoid Portuguese descent looks like.

Yes, I know all about Edwin Booth's OTHELLO. :-)

Shakespeare, himself, had Othello as an Arab/Berber. It's in his own description of the character, which is extant. And then there's Holzlnecht's definitive book, which was a required book in my college class on Shakespeare's work. <

The earliest depictions of Othello, in print or painting, I have seen are from 1709. It doesn't show the actor as a Negro. A 1776 print of David Garrick as the Shakespearean characters he performed is also devoid of Negritude. And a photo, taken in 1912, of H. Beerbohm Tree as Othello, shows him in armor...which would be correct for the character!

I agree with your husband...I wouldn't put on OTHELLO, today, if my life depended upon it; wouldn't touch MERCHANT OF VENICE with a barge pole either! Shame, because both are great plays , but the controversy is too much to handle. :-(

I too am sick and tired of the crap that gets posted here; nothing but stupid lies, exaggerations, and/or utter garbage that people who know virtually NOTHING AT ALL about topics they post about find on line and fall for.

And heaven forefend that someone, who actually KNOWS the topic, contradicts them...they go nutso. :-(

Wow! You know your stuff. I don't!

It's interesting but for 12 years, my next door neighbor was a Berber Muslim. He looked like Jean-Paul Belmondo although totally Berber, spoke French and Arabic with a strong French accent and despised Arabs because they had overtaken the Berbers and imposed a harsh islam on them and brought evil and violence to his region of North Africa. His name was Salem and he always called God “God” (not Allah) and always asked me to pray when my husband and I were in deep trouble about six years ago. His children are all Christian.

Just an interesting anecdote.

Moors were Berbers, Middle Eastern and not black African, although ‘Moors’ was later used to mean Muslims such as from Spain. Othello might have been conceived as Spanish, but Muslim!

Yes. From my personal experience, and the beautiful and sad movie, Of Gods and Men, Berbers are very decent people.
