October 18. People begin to forget the Atlantic cable, now generally conceded a failure. This is Cyrus’s Katabasis. The frantic orgasm of only fifty days ago seems a strange, remote, historical fact. We made fools of ourselves beyond all question, but these Anglican criticisms are ungracious. What we exulted over so absurdly was the prospect of closer communication and hourly intercourse with England. The general spontaneous rejoicing of that time (Charles King says every half-fledged village on the upper Mississippi had its bonfire and its speechifications) is among the healthiest and most hopeful symptoms of this people in my day.
