Nope. Alligators can survive even when the surface is frozen by sticking their ssnouts above the water while the water freezes.

One or two nice cold winters will cure that problem.

Gators will just 'winter over" at the discharge pipes at out numerous steam and Nuclear plants. Other critters have done it so it may get a little crowded(ring the dinner bell)

Texas student plays with giant gator in graduation pictures: 'He's a real life dinosaur'

FoxNews.com ^ | Aug 7, 2018 | Jennifer Earl

Makenzie Noland celebrated her upcoming college graduation by posing in her cap and stole with her good friend "Big Tex" — a nearly 14-foot-long alligator that lives in a wildlife sanctuary in Beaumont, Texas.

The soon-to-be Texas A&M University grad has been living at Gator Country for the past three months as she interns with the organization. During her time at the wildlife rescue, Noland has bonded with many of the 370 alligators on site, specifically Tex.

Over the past several months, Noland has been training with Tex — under the careful supervision of alligator experts.

"Tex is the one who let me into his pond. He does pick favorites, and I'm honored he likes me enough to let me get in there and play with him every day," Noland, 21, told Fox News.

Noland likens the gentle giant to a "puppy," as he often follows commands in order to get treats.

"Whenever you're training a puppy, you commend them for sitting down and give them a treat," Noland explained. "When I'm telling Tex to 'come here' using a hand motion I will reward him, tickle his nose and toss food in his mouth."

Noland's close bond with Tex influenced her decision to feature him in her graduation pictures. After all, the wildlife ecology major wanted to showcase her passion for animals — gators in particular.

"Every single time I get in the water with him I realize how huge of a creaturen he is. He's a real life dinosaur," Noland said, adding that she was honored to get the opportunity to work with him.

“There are alligators in North Carolina, so the cold doesn’t affect them much. They burrow under the ground in a riverbank and hibernate...................”

I suspect it may have something to do with the frost line. In the south people don’t have basements because the frost line is something like 6 inches deep. In Montana everyone has a basement because the frost line is like 7 feet deep and if you already have to dig that deep another foot gets you a basement. I don’t know how deep alligators tend to dig but I’m sure it’s something instinctual like 2 to 3 feet which would have them free solid in the winter if they are far north enough.

Alligators can survive in cold temps. They can’t reproduce in them though. I doubt alligator populations can be sustained in Tennessee. However if there are just one or 2 springs that are warm enough over about a 10 year period, they possible could. They do well in coastal NC. That’s a warmer climate though.

And to think, fifty years ago they were considered an “endangered” species due to gator poaching.

A deceased 16 footer was pulled out of the Alligator (no fooling) River in NC 8 or 9 years ago. It made the papers.
