As a 32-year-old man became the latest to die while working in a sewer in India, activists are taking to the streets in protest.
The young and old men who work as manual scavengers have one of the most dangerous jobs in the country.
They brave stench and filth in the most deplorable conditions imaginable when they descend into the gutters to risk their lives for a meagre pay of around 7,500 to 10,000 rupees (£79 to £105) a month.
Private daily contractors can be paid as little as 500 rupees (£5) for a day's cleaning.
Recent government statistics revealed that a manual scavenger has died every five days since the start of 2017 while cleaning sewers.

I’m going to reassess my complaints in life.
For the same reason that Black Americans remain loyal to the Democrat Party. Logic is not instrumental in the answer.
LOL
Does sort of put things in perspective.
Once upon a time, thousands or tens of thousands would die from cholera or dysentery because places like India had no sewer systems.
Now they have a sewer system.
And someone dies every 5 days.
I do hope they improve things so that fewer sewer workers die. It really is a shame to have such a dangerous job, and for so little pay. But let’s not lose sight of the fact that this “terrible” situation is infinitely better than what they had before imperialism.
So sad that this job exposes them to so many diseases. It’s a death sentence.
I actually know a very lovely Indian woman who came to the USA in her teens (about 30 years ago), and whose father was killed in exactly this way. He and a colleague were both asphyxiated in a sewer.
She’s as smart as whip, became a Christian in her 20’s, has nice kids, and is very active in her local Wesleyan Church.
Just another example of how America remains the greatest country on Earth.
Just think what they could earn instead in San Francisco.
Ditto that
Sewer worker in India.
Adding to my list of Jobs I don’t want.
Mike Rowe won’t touch this career path.
India could have used another hundred years of British colonial rule.
They might have eliminated the caste system.
Ghandis gift to India was socialism. It insured that the country remained in poverty for most until recent reforms. Some crimes against humanity should be remembered.
Gotta hand it to those Indians - standing in front of trains or swimming in crap. Living the dream they are.
The guy that works with me here at the farm ends up doing just about every job you can imagine. Some not much fun and lots of it really hot, cold and sometimes wet. For every lousy task he always says, “At least we ain’t pouring concrete.”
We are going to put that on his headstone, “At least I’m not pouring concrete.”
“Mike Rowe wont touch this career path.”
Somebody should suggest he branch out into global dirty jobs.
A sewer in India is as close to hell as one can get while still alive.

The “black hole of Calcutta” is/was a real thing .. like the sewer workers you died of asphyxiation.
