Susan Smith reports that she was carjacked in South Carolina by a man who took her two small children in the backseat of her car. Although authorities immediately began searching for three-year-old Michael and one-year-old Alex, they could find no trace of them or of Smiths car. After nine days of intense national media attention, Smith finally confessed that the carjacking tale was false and that she had driven her Mazda into the John D. Long Lake in order to drown her children.
Both Susan and her husband, David Smith, who had had multiple affairs during their on-and-off relationship, had used their children as pawns in their tempestuous marriage. Apparently, Susan was involved with another man who did not want children, and she thought that killing her children was the only way to continue the relationship.
Ironically, Smiths murder came to light because she had covered her tracks too well. While believing that the car and children would be discovered in the lake shortly after the search was started, she never anticipated that the authorities might not be able to find the car. After living under the pressure of the medias scrutiny day after day, Smith buckled. She was convicted on two counts of murder and sentenced to life in prison.
In a book David Smith later wrote about the death of his children, Beyond All Reason, he expressed an ambiguous wish to see Susan on death row because he would never be able to relax and live a full life with her in prison.
But women don’t lie, you must believe the “victim”. /s
I remember this well.
There are run-of-the-mill murderers.
Then there are truly evil, sociopathic infamous sicko murderers from the pit of Hell.
Then there’s Susan Smith.
This is what happens when society enshrines in its laws and elevates in its culture a physiological set of events within the female human body to the status of a religious experience. There is nothing that will not be sacrificed to that god.
Sometime in the 90s a couple of prison guards were fired for boinking the Smith girl in prison. Unreal
As I recall, the white sheriff never did fall for her story that a black man had done it.
save for later
I remember this.
I was working at a local PD/SO department and I remember saying at the time that I thought she had done it, it was just . . . vicious.
What evil, just unadulterated evil.
It still feels so vivid all these years later. I remember the wave of nausea that hit me when we learned that she confessed.
What a shame...I’m wondering if Mr. Smith recovered...When my fiancee was killed by a drunk, I thought I couldn’t find love, but I did..and I have a Wonderful Deplorable Family now...
Today is the 25th anniversary. Mr. Smith remarried and had two children, a boy and girl.
