In the 50s, this was called ‘passing’. Worked pretty well, until the kid, or grand kid, popped out black.

In the 50s, this was called ‘passing’.

It worked for people of mixed ancestry who looked more like swarthy whites than like blacks - the writer and critic Anatole Broyard is probably the most famous example (a black Creole who looked more like someone with Middle Eastern ancestry). The girl in this story couldn't possible pull off such a "pass."
