And I had no idea until they pulled the plug that Warner Brothers even owned DramaFever.

I know Viki is owned by Rakuten, which is a Japanese conglomerate.

DramaFever was also a Japanese company (owned by one of the Japanese banks, I think). Warner Brothers bought it in late 2016 and the quality started to go down, but it was still popular because it had the highest number of the old dramas still on its site. Viki does not have as much material.

One speculation is that they shut it down to try force people to go to a new “pay per view” service that Warner Brothers is setting up, which would charge magnitudes higher for watching (DramaFever was basically $50 a year). But I don’t think any of the present viewers will do that.
