From what I understand, it provides two benefits, neither of which outweighs the downside of lost deck space, increased manning requirements, and increase in radar signature.

Two islands supposedly helps run flight operations more efficiently with better visibility. I don’t see how this is any great shakes, but that is what I have heard.

Secondly, it provides redundancy in the event of battle damage. If one island is damaged, the other can assume the roles.

That’s it. See...I told you it wasn’t much!

The Brits have always done things their own way. Sometimes good, sometimes silly, sometimes just bad. But they do go their own way.
