I don’t see them as one and the same. I thought Carson was a vendetta looking for a situation to happen. I see Kelly’s situation as legitimate. She was merely recalling a time and place in her past. She wasn’t advocating for the use of blackface.
Carlson was a vendetta looking to happen. She wanted her “own show” (too big for Fox and Friends), so Roger Ailes gave her the 2 pm time slot. Carlson delivered the lowest ratings of any show on FNC, so the network decided not to renew her contract—happens all the time in broadcasting. Realizing no one was lining up to hire her, Ms. Carlson jumped on the #MeToo bandwagon and built a harassment case around a few ill-advised comments Ailes made to her.
Meanwhile, the younger Murdochs (having been forced out at Fox News a decade earlier) were back on the scene, ready to replace their father and anxious for revenge. Ailes’s comments gave them a reason for the next-gen Murdochs to engineer his ouster and they were happy to pay Carlson $20 million for her assistance.
Too bad Roger Ailes died a few months into his retirement. NDAs aside, he was always a street brawler and I truly believe he would have written a book providing his side of the story, one much different than what was reported in the press.
