Best Ear/Eye Protection for the Gun Range?
vanity ^ | October 31, 2018 | me

People on this board know everything (or at least everything important). Can you recommend your favorite brand and/or type of ear and eye protection for the range? Thank you so much.

Silicon or foamy plugs. I get mine at home improvement stores. I understand that the Howard Leight Ear Plugs are good and some models are quite affordable. I would get the big orange banded model as they are easier to spot when packing up to leave. I use orange work gloves too, for the same reason.

Kleenex? Nice. Being the serious shooter, you should try using your index fingers.

I’ll second all the recommendations for Howard Leight electronic ear muffs.

As for safety glasses, polycarb lenses without distortion... good luck.

For Ear Protection, go with a decent amplified hearing muff such as the Howard Leight Impact Sport. Also, always, always, ALWAYS double up on ear protection, which means put in foam earplugs, then don your hearing muffs.

The Howard Leights are loud enough that you can still carry on a normal conversation while wearing double protection, hear range commands, etc., but if the seal between the ear muffs and the temples isn’t perfect, the second set of foam earplugs save you from tinnitus when you’re 60 like me.

For eye protection, if you wear prescription glasses, the lenses are rated for impact and will do. If you don’t, then any good pair of safety glasses from the construction section of Home Depot will work just fine.

If you need just reading glasses, there are stick-on readers that you can get to put on your shooting glasses, such as the Hydrotac that you can get online, and only cost $15. The nice thing is that you can stick them to the TOP of your shooting glasses so that you can more clearly see the front sight of your firearm.

Muffs are not for everyone. In my case, they interfered with the proper mounting of the shotgun on my shoulder and I was subconsciously adjusting my head to accommodate for them. That was noticed by a shotgun instructor I was with one day.

I had to switch to foam ear plugs........

My wife is a board certified audiologist and asserts that the electronic ear protection isn't sufficient as it still allows the damage to be done in that microsecond it takes to activate the dampening.

I double up with soft earplugs and the Howard Leight muffs.

A rating of 29 or 30 DB for hearing protection is something to look for. Cheap safety glasses with a “Z” rating will should be sufficient but better if you like.

I had a pair of industrial ear muffs that would suppress over 85DB but you could hear people talk. Between two large generators at 110 DB you could carry on a normal conversation and even hear the valve train and engine internal noises.

Thus sayeth Clutch Martin “....I would get the big orange banded model as they are easier to spot when packing up to leave. I use orange work gloves too, for the same reason.”

May I ask if your firearms and tackle bags are orange also?

I use 3M safety muffs and 3M safety glasses.

Take a look on Amazon or online on their store.

some of the highest dB rating reduction and the glasses are cheap enough you don’t break the bank when you lose them or scratch them...which I hate!!!

oh yeah..I also have UVEX Spoggles.

Try these. They don’t scratch as easily and they keep the dust out of your eyes. I have a clear and dark pair.

I have the same problem of the muffs getting in the way of rifle aiming.

I recently saw an add for this electronic ear plugs new product, might check it out.

SILYNX UNVEILS NEW CLARUS PRO LITE IN-EAR ELECTRONIC HEARING PROTECTION

A bit steep at $169.00 but worth a look.

Thank you, I ordered both of those - I have hearing loss and the free muffs at the range don’t seem to do much, even with foam ear plugs.
