People. At the time of construction, the region was wetter. It was not a desert. Stop thinking in terms of what Egypt looks like today, and instead imagine what it used to look like then.

The Sphinx enclosure, as well as the original blocks of the Sphinx temple, show unequivocally rain-induced erosion incompatible with the view that it happened during or even since the 4th dynasty. This isn't even controversial.
