Florida voters overwhelmingly approved a measure on the ballot on Tuesday to ban greyhound racing throughout the state by the end of 2020 - though some warn dogs may be left homeless as a result.

Amendment 13, which required 60 per cent support in Tuesday’s voting, unexpectedly received a whopping 69 per cent, easily ensuring passage.

That means that the 11 greyhound racing tracks in Florida will be put out of business within the next two years, according to NBC News.

Now the challenge will be to find new homes for the up to 7,000 greyhound dogs who will be unemployed

I had a friend who had a dog like that.

But I’m guessing you’re in a more rural area?

This was the suburbs.

Our female thinks she’s Alpha and he is such a gentleman he lets her but if you watch carefully you can catch those moments when he lets her know who is boss but you have to really be paying attention because those moments last milliseconds and they are gone.

PETA believes that people shouldn’t have pets at all.

IS THAT TRUE?!?!

I saw a picture of theirs of a hot woman at the beach and they noted where the different pieces of meat would be, like they would show on a cow.

Causing eating a woman is the same as eating a cow.

Belong to PETA should be classified as a mental illness.

They are sweet dogs—at least the ones I’ve encountered are. A curious thing about adopted greyhounds is they have to be acclimated to living in a home. It only takes a week or so, but they’ve never encountered things like stairs, children, windows, etc. They are happier in calm environments and respond to gentle treatment.

Need some specific homes and the transition reportedly isn’t always easy, but up here in the Northeast most adopted dogs are shipped in from elsewhere. I’m sure we could take in many of these pups.

"We at PETA very much love the animal companions who share our homes, but we believe that it would have been in the animals’ best interests if the institution of “pet keeping”—i.e., breeding animals to be kept and regarded as “pets”—never existed. The international pastime of domesticating animals has created an overpopulation crisis; as a result, millions of unwanted animals are destroyed every year as “surplus.”

"This selfish desire to possess animals and receive love from them causes immeasurable suffering, which results from manipulating their breeding, selling or giving them away casually, and depriving them of the opportunity to engage in their natural behavior. They are restricted to human homes, where they must obey commands and can only eat, drink, and even urinate when humans allow them to."

They’re not banning the DOG, they’re banning the racing.

We had a white Shar Pei that lived til 14. Stubbornest dog we ever had. If he was out at night I’d go out to get him and he’d just freeze in place like that would stop me from seeing him. I’d just laugh and say....you’re white! Get in here!

PETA believes that people shouldn’t have pets at all.

They equate it with slavery.

Unbelievable.

Horrible decision by Florida.

Mass slaughter of greyhounds, just like in MA.

Greyhounds make wonderful pets. They are awesome dogs and love to run. They also love a comfortable couch. The people of Florida are idiots. They are not mistreated at the tracks. Thanks to the idiots in Florida thousands of dogs are now in danger.

Just move dog racing from Florida to a state like Texas. I can see a place like Retama Park in Schertz as a good home for dog racing.
