The troubling truth behind that viral video of a plucky baby bear climbing a mountain side
The Sun ^ | Nov 8, 2018 | James Cox

Posted on 11/08/2018 7:26:10 AM PST by ETL

The clip went viral on social media with viewers admitting they felt “stressed out” as the cub continually slid down the mountain towards rocks.

It starts by showing the pair clambering over a rocky patch of ground as the mum guides her young cub towards the top of the mountain.

Plenty of heart-stopping moments follow as the cub struggles to reach her, and it leaves long trails in the snow where its claws have dug in to stop it slipping too far below.

But with true perseverance, the youngster finally reaches the peak.

While undeniably adorable, biologists have shed new light on what is going on.

Researchers say the mum is terrified of the drone that is filming them.

At one point she even stares at the camera as it flies perilously close, and she deems it a threat to her little one.

Dr. Katie LaBarbera, behavioral ecologist, tweeted: "Mom is *super* worried.

"The way she paces back and forth, looks around is very anxious.

"When she appears to push him down? She's pushing him away b/c she thinks the drone is about to *attack* him.

"Very bad drone behaviour here. Good momma bear."

I read about that two days ago. Yes, there is a Disneytype charm and fascination of seeing the little cub slide so far down and make it back up, the tiny black animals on top of the vast fields of snowy white. But he wouldn’t be doing this if those drones were not there frightening both animals.
People need to back off and respect the privacy of life in the wild. Many animals have become more nocturnal just to avoid human contact during the daytime. Leave them be.

Then, there’s the kind of drone operator who wants to see brushfires close up. Many of those people interfere with helicopters that are trying to put those fires out.
Lack of common sense as with these two examples is what will soon lead to more government regulation for those who
don’t know or don’t care what ‘being considerate’ means.

Drones should not be in the hands of morons. Scaring a momma bear half to death to get a video shoot is stupid.

I didn't see anything "charming" or "cute" about this. These are real life animals, not teddy bear toys or cartoon figures. Little thing was no doubt teriffied.

Back in 1971, there was a TV anti-hunting-anti-gun film SAY GOODBY, showing a polar bear hunt.
It was designed to anger those watching it as you see closeups of the terrified bear and cubs in the shadow of the helicopter rotor blades, a hunter then raises his rifle, shoots and more closeups as the mother bear slowly dies.

It was all fake.
The helicopter crew was tagging bears, and if you looked real close you can see the dart fly out the end of the air rifle. The momma bear slowly is drugged so she can be tagged. She and the cubs were not harmed.

Whatever the reason, the bears were obviously in a terrifying and dangerous predicament. But then, that’s life in their world.

A momma bears job is to teach her young
to survive, no matter what she feels is
threatening her cub. That is why the
number one rule of momma bears exists.
Never get between a mother bear and
her cub.
The film maker took this rule in total
disregard. This is glorification for
YouTube video hits.
